Data wisdom is the capacity to understand your business from the data’s perspective. The effectiveness of this wisdom is directly related to the level of omniscience of your data. What does this mean? I answer this with a question, “What does your data know? And what does it not?” Is your data fully aware of all aspects of the business? Is it objective at its view of the organization or does it hide perspectives that are not popular? Are you limiting the information captured because your afraid management will not understand the value the data holds. Or are you maybe worried that the data will provide a poor reflection on your own work performance? For the sake of the business, the data needs to know everything.
If you’re concerned about your own work performance, use the data to your advantage. Learn from the story it tells so you can improve. Change your perspective from the data being a threat into seeing it for what it is, a non-condemning mirror that can reveal areas of growth. As you make changes and improve, the data will in turn reward you by telling your new story of progress and improvement. Don’t fear the data – its goal is not to take you down but to provide valuable insights for development.
The same goes for your business. Data wisdom gives the ability to make good business decisions based on knowledge and understanding. Capture as much data as you can and let your business intelligence program find insight after insight. Remember, the goal of BI is to make your business the best version of itself. Providing objective data from every function of the business is paramount.
I’d like to make one further comment. As you gather all this data, remember to keep your perspective truly objective when seeking insights. Listen closely to what the data is saying. If it doesn’t make sense, don’t force an insight. Get more data, get more business input, do whatever it takes to uncover the magical insight that is resisting discovery. This one insight treasure might separate you from your competition.
